Chapter 9

Cameron sat on the floor, Scott and Hugh drowsing against him, and wished he, too, could just drift off to sleep. His mind was going too fast for that to happen any time soon, though, because he’d seen an expression on Scott’s face just now and heard something in his voice that he hadn’t witnessed before. It was clear Scott was in deeper with Hugh than Cameron had realized, and he had the uneasy feeling that this would be the last time he’d be with Scott like this. And without Scott, the world felt suddenly rather large and cold to Cameron. They’d never been together, not as a couple, but they’d always known the other was there, had always known they could count on that no matter what else happened around them. Even though they’d both hooked up with other people over the years, had relationships, even, none of those had ever come close to the ease and the trust that lay between them. Not until now.

He should be glad for Scott. It was what Scott had always wanted, to be with someone. He just managed either to pick the wrong guy, or to screw it up some other way. Hugh was different. That wasn’t to say Scott still might not screw it up, but there was a calmness, an innate balance to Hugh that obviously answered a need in Scott. It called to something in Cameron, too. If he had that waiting for him at home, Cameron thought he might not feel the same desperate need to roam the world. He sighed irritably and shifted, causing both Scott and Hugh to mumble something, before making themselves comfortable against him again. It was suddenly enticing just to let go of his thoughts and sink into what reminded him disconcertingly of a puppy pile.

He pressed a quick kiss against Scott’s forehead—he was asleep, so it was allowed—and wrapped his arm more tightly round Hugh, who he suspected was drooling slightly on Cameron in his sleep. Well, the kid got a free pass tonight. The trip Cameron had made to the sex shop on Friday had only been to fill a bit of time, but it had been one of his better ideas. It turned out Hugh had no prior experience with toys, and that thought, and the eager delight with which he’d responded to his first experience, had set Cameron’s imagination roaming free.

But Hugh was with Scott, and it wasn’t meant to be. If wishes were horses, his dad had always said to him when he was growing up. His dad who had turned his back on Cameron after learning he was gay. That was fine. Cameron didn’t need him. He didn’t need anyone.
